How To Lose Calories, Save Taste!

I love decadent food. I’ve been given to fits of ecstasy over really good cheese fries, molten chocolate fudge cake and anything State-Fair-related on a stick. But unfortunately, decadent foods don’t seem to sing my praises when I step on the scale. So here are a few around-the-kitchen tricks to help cut calories and keep taste.

Banana Bakes Great!
It’s a vegan trick. I stole it. Vegans do not eat any animal byproducts (no meat, fish, or dairy), and in strictest form, no honey (comes from bees). Vegan gourmets must use wit, character and a lot of creative techniques when it comes to baking. My favorite trick? Substitute eggs in your favorite sweet cakes and muffins with bananas. They bind and stick the same and make less of a calorie and cholesterol dent. For a wealth of delicious, sassy and fun vegan recipes visit The Post Punk Kitchen.

Use Fresh Ingredients!

Dried spices are great and all, and I love dry rubs on steak, fish and chicken before they hit the grill but if you want to get maximum flavor with little to no calorie dent add fresh ingredients to recipes in place of what you usually you get from the pantry. If you are making pasta and you usually add dried basil to the sauce substitute chopped fresh basil leaves, minced, sauteed garlic instead of garlic salt, and sauteed onions instead of onion powder.

Have Fun!

One of the greatest parts about cooking is the versatility and inventiveness of each ingredient. Only eat apples bite by bite? Try baked apples with a scoop of vanilla ice cream drizzled with honey (unless you are a strict vegan) for a lighter take on an ice cream sundae.
