It’s grilling season. Time to talk burgers. There are a lot of options when it comes to buying grill-ready meats, fish and vegetables. What about the old standby - ground beef? How do you know that you are making a healthy selection? Luckily, we live in the age of the eco-chic gourmet. You don't have to try very hard to be a conscious, and lean, carnivore.
The burgerIf you are going with ground beef, look for local beef that has been grass fed. Look for lean meat low in fat and saturated fat.
SalmonI’ve been loving salmon burgers lately, with a little spinach and feta mixed in? Yum! But I also care about the fishes. I only buy wild salmon, never farmed. Until they change the way they farm salmon I’m not eating it.
Understand the numbers Most ground meats, beef, turkey and chicken have the fat percentages listed on the label. Get familiar with understanding what these numbers mean. 93 percent lean means 93 percent of the meat is lean and 7 percent is fat. Anything 90 percent or leaner is a healthy choice.
Veggie outI am always impressed by how delicious veggie burgers are these days! Pop those suckers on the grill, dress with a little ripe avocado, caramelized onions. Oh, man, you’ll have me turning into a full blown vegetarian in no time!
Happy season's grilling!
