FEATURE: Managing Your Multivitamins

Do multivitamins ever strike you as horribly confusing and overpriced? It’s sort of like the way I feel about that metallic, barely-there, Gucci-whathaveyou that looks so great on the model but would in no way flatter me. Why drop my cash on smoke and mirrors?

That’s the thing that gets to me about vitamins. I like my food real. And while eating fruits and vegetables is a tangible nutrient source, like investing in real estate, popping omega-3 vitamins is like investing in the stock market. I’m buying ... what? It’s working for me ... how?

So here it is: for all of you who are confused, scared, skeptical and unfamiliar, it's a vitamin-judging girl’s guide to vitamin investing.
Vitamin C
I like Emergen-C - that cranberry-flavored stuff in a packet. It’s wonderful for colds and hangovers alike, it tastes good, and it fizzes. It contains 1,000 milligrams of vitamin C. So what’s so great about C? It’s known for immunity boosting, collagen repairing, and stress reduction.

Vitamin E
Taken with vitamin C, E may prevent against Alzheimer’s disease. Vitamin E is also good for preventing against heart disease. It’s a very powerful antioxidant. Vitamin E oil is a good way to prevent against scarring. Try it. Buy a bottle of vitamin E next time you fry your finger on the pan or cut yourself dicing all those healthy vegetables you’ve been eating lately.

Magnesium

Magnesium is important for healthy muscle function. It also may contribute to a healthy nervous system and keep blood pressure regulated.

Folic Acid & B Vitamins
Folic Acid and B Vitamins may reduce inflammation. Chronic bodily inflammation, a possible side effect of an unhealthy lifestyle and high stress levels, may contribute to a number of age related diseases like high blood pressure, and dementia.

Basic Multivitamin

Our bodies like variety. We need a bunch of vitamins and nutrients to perform at tip-top shape. Give your body a multivitamin with 20 or 30 different nutrients. It’s like sending your kid to a good liberal arts college, makes for a well rounded individual.
Get your vitamins from food!

I just wanted to comment on multivitamins. It is very important that you know what your are getting yourself into when buying a multivitamin. Most of the time users of multivitamins are not getting the right amounts or proportions of the vitamins they need most. For example, many people who regularily eat meat will not vitamins such as vitamin B12, or most minerals magnesium, zinc, iron, etc. If you eat your 5-10 servings of vegetables you will not need to supplement for any of the B vitamins, Vitamin C, or Vitamin A.

On top of all of this an excess of vitamins can cause serious complications. So talk to your doctor or better yet a dietitian before going on a vitamin regimen!
