You’d pretty much have to be living under a rock to miss the whole trans-fat uproar.
We know trans-fat is bad for our health, but do we know why? Trans-fats, also known as hydrogenated oils, may increase “bad” LDL cholesterol levels and are considered a leading cause of heart disease.
How to avoid trans-fats?
Most foods that have a “zero trans fat” label are a safe bet. But to be extra careful, avoid processed junk foods and stick to earthy fruits and vegetables.
If you must junk out, follow these guidelines:
Think bakery, not bag. Get yourself a yummy, fresh-baked, death-by-chocolate cookie instead of a Snickers bar.
Stick to natural peanut butter where the oil rises to the top. Many peanut butter brands have used hydrogenated oils for years to get the peanut butter to maintain one consistency. Be sure your peanut butter is trans-fat-free by picking the stuff that separates.
Think local! When you indulge your cravings for savory and sweet snacks, visit a favorite mom and pop bakery rather than splurge on a dusty pastry from the corner store that has been around longer than Bush has been in office.
Nutrient rich creamy goodness....
Guacamole, Tuscan white bean dip, olive tapenade and bruschetta, when you snack, try to incorporate whole foods. Craving bbq chips? How about smokey bbq almonds instead? Ice cream pangs? Couple a small scoop of vanilla ice cream with fresh berries and chopped hazelnuts. Maximize healthy snacking, and get a dose of goodness with every yummy bite!
