Spring is here! Almost. Sort of.

Written by Kathryn Savage

The weather is starting to turn around, spring is here! Hopefully. In light of the recent daylight savings switch, I got to thinking...during these final stages of winter what can we do to ease the push towards spring? It’s been a long haul - and cabin fever (a.k.a seasonal depression), can affect even the biggest fan of all that white fluffy stuff. So here are a few tips for relaxing and de-stressing anytime of year. Especially this time of year!

Seize the Moment!

What? It’s above freezing? Take a break and step outside! Admit it, when the temp is transitioning from winter to spring it has more mood swings than Britney Spears! So get it while you can, take a few moments to soak up the sunshine and above freezing temps and go for a walk or a jog. It’s a nice way to mix up your day, stay fit, and improve your mood!

Try a New Recipe

Pick a recipe that originated in a tropical locale. Making a lively mango salad is a great way to add variety to your grocery list. The tropical ingredients can put a smile on your face and whisk you away to simpler, more coat-free times.

Mango Salad

Ingredients

  • 3 whole ripe mangos
  • 1 avocado
  • 1 medium jicama
  • 1 seedless cucumber
  • 1/4 cup chopped cilantro
  • 2 tablespoons Siracha sauce
  • 2 limes juiced
  • salt and pepper

Directions

Peel and cut the jicama and the cucumber into 2 inch long, thin strips. Peel the mangoes, and cut into cube like wedges. Peel the avocado and slice into cubes. Combine all ingredients in a large mixing bowl. Add cilantro, lime juice, Siracha sauce and salt and pepper to taste.

Serve and enjoy!

Change the Lighting

Changing the lighting in your house creates a visual difference and can jump start excitement about the coming warm weather. Change the position of a lamp, buy a few candles and invest in a few Energy Star energy saving light bulbs. Good for the environment and your mood!

I always live for today, except from September to April
written by Rebecca, March 25, 2008
I have always dedicated my time to the here and now, and enjoyed every moment. As I get older I find it harder not to spend a large portion of the year thinking about the end of winter. Here in Idaho, it snowed on September 29th last year, and it snowed again last night. I'm going to try all of your suggestions, because we still have a month or more left until it will be comfortable to be out and about.

What is 'Outlook'?

A healthy outlook is an important component of longevity. The Okinawans call it Ikigai, and Nicoyans call it “plan de vida,” but in both cultures the phrase means “why I wake up in the morning.” Read more...
