Why Having a Best Friend at Work Makes You More Productive and Happy

In the Business Insider video below, Blue Zones founder Dan Buettner explains some of our newest happiness research, which we compiled in partnership with National Geographic and Gallup.

Using research and principles outlined in The Blue Zones of Happiness: Lessons from the World’s Happiest People, Buettner details four important things that will enhance your work life. We’ve also summarized the video below.

1. Try to Combine Passion with Your Profession

For long-term happiness, try to make your career something that speaks to your passions.

2. Try to Work as Close to Home as Possible

The thing people rank as the most hated part of their day-to-day lives is their car commutes. So minimize commuting by car whenever possible.

3. Make a Work ‘Best Friend’

According to 2 million people surveyed by Gallup, having a good friend at work is an important part of whether people enjoy their jobs or not. Watch the video above for some tips on how to put yourself out there and make some enriching work friendships.

4. Take Multiple Shorter Vacations, Over A Single Long One, Per Year

Six weeks of vacation per year seems to make people the happiest, but Americans only take 11 days per year on average.
