Epidemiologist and national public health expert.

Dr. Toben F. Nelson is a social epidemiologist with the University of Minnesota School of Public Health. He teaches graduate courses on social science and policy in public health and is a nationally recognized expert on the prevention of alcohol abuse and related problems.

Toben has served as an Investigator on numerous federal grants to examine the implementation and effects of local and state efforts to prevent excessive drinking. He is the author, with Ken Winters and Vince Hyman, of Preventing Binge Drinking on College Campuses, released in 2012 by Hazelden Publishing. Prior to coming to the University of Minnesota, he was a researcher with the Harvard School of Public Health College Alcohol Study and part of the team evaluating the multisite environmental prevention program “A Matter of Degree.” Toben’s areas of expertise also include food and nutrition, physical activity promotion, obesity prevention, and motor vehicle safety.
