Transforming San Jose: Blue Zones Project

The Blue Zones Project® is a community-wide well-being initiative designed to make healthy choices easier. We encourage sustainable changes in our built environment and social networks, often suggesting systems-level changes in key settings such as worksites, schools, restaurants, grocery stores, faith-based communities, and neighborhoods. By helping people live longer, better through behavioral change, we can lower healthcare costs, improve productivity, and improve quality of life. The Blue Zones Project is based on principles identified during a twenty-year worldwide longevity study commissioned by National Geographic and detailed in Dan Buettner, Sr.’s, New York Times bestseller.

Councilmember Dev Davis and the Health Trust invite you to join us for a community leadership event in which Dan Buettner, Jr., Vice President of Blue Zones Project will share the National Geographic origin story of the Blue Zones and the lessons from the world’s longest-lived people. We will then highlight the transformational work that the Blue Zones Project is doing in 61 American cities, the results, and a town hall pressure test of doing this work in San Jose. Following the keynote, Dan Buettner, Jr., will be joined on stage by Shelly Trumbo, Katrina Worlund, and Jake Glover for an expert panel discussion on national best practices for community engagement and health equity.

If San Jose chooses to move forward with a Blue Zones Project, it will be the single largest transformation ever, and a one-of-a-kind demonstration for others to follow.
